Space
For many years, while working as an editor at the United Nations, I edited all the documents for the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its two subcommittees, Scientific and Technical Subcommittee and Legal Subcommittee. This means that I have some understanding of space law, such as it is, the importance of the Earth orbits for all of us, the status of their misuse and the dire threats of space debris and weaponization. Currently, there are at least 440 thousand 5G satellites operating, approved or proposed, and that number represents only low-Earth orbit satellites and excludes the 5G satellites in other orbits around the Earth. The Earth orbits are a virtual free-for-all and the oligarchs that threaten all life on earth terrestrially are just starting to threaten life on Earth even more dangerously by their invasion of the Earth orbits. We must stop this. It is even more important that you understand what is currently going on in space than what is going on terrestrially, for the threat from the misuse of space is the greater threat.
Space law is woefully inadequate, due to the fact that the euphemistically named international community - which used to be more honestly called "the Great Powers" - want space to remain a Wild West and a free-for-all. The problem with this is that we are all massively at risk from what is now going on in space, not least because space used to be the domain of nation states, but like everything else, has now been invaded and is being polluted by rapacious corporations. Please tell me how you are going to persuade a limited liability company to act responsibly in space.
The urgent problem of space debris was discussed year after year while I worked at the UN, but it is now an even more dire problem given that it is planned to put hundreds of thousands of new satellites in space. Just to give you an idea, until recently there were barely two thousand satellites up there. We are now being fed some ludicrous story about the space agencies working on developing technology to deal with space debris. This involves harpooning over 480 million particles, many as tiny as needles, while they travel around the earth at 17,500 miles per hour! It has also been suggested that capturing them may be made easier by spraying them with some gluey substance. Am I insane or is it them? If you believe this nonsense, your brain is beyond saving.
Additionally, it seems to be the case that various countries are creating space ports all over the globe precisely so that they can dispense with any liability concerns. Are these satellites even insured? We should remember that there are already nuclear power sources in space. What entity is going to be liable when some incident in space results in a whole country or half a continent being wiped out, for example? And NATO declared space a domain of warfare in December 2019, just to add some more dangerous spice to the mix. You need to understand that the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 declared space the province of all humankind, not a domain that Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos and the Davos oligarchs are entitled to turn into yet another polluted junkyard, not to mention the amount of rocket fuel that would pollute our atmosphere while they did so. So much for their bogus concern about climate change!
